Program Description

For many years, Alma College has had a fruitful collaboration with the Academia Latinoamericana in Quito, Ecuador, headed by Diego del Corral. Many Alma students have traveled to Quito for Spanish language instruction and to study Ecuadorian culture. Alma faculty also have worked with Señor del Corral and the Academia to design Alma College Spring Term courses in Ecuador in disciplines ranging from education to biology.

Students may choose to study at more than one location provided they enroll in a minimum four week program in each location.

Possibilities for Alma students in Ecuador include exploring the environmental wonders of the Galapagos Islands, practicing Spanish language skills, studying Ecuadorian culture, and completing internships in environmental studies or entrepreneurship.

WHY QUITO?
The Academia Latinoamericana is located in Quito, a city of over one million offering theatre, concerts, museums, art galleries, tourist attractions and excellent food. Quito is about 15 miles from the equator and lies at the base of Mount Pichincha. Some say that the climate includes all four seasons each day due to the wide variation in temperature. At 3:00 a.m. winter begins, between 6:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. spring arrives, summer runs from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and then fall starts. The school has 21 classrooms, a library, solarium, auditorium and a multipurpose indoor sports court.

Quito is the land of contrasts - rich and poor, hot and cold, ancient and modern. Where else can you see a cow, a horse, or a pig grazing on a four-lane highway in the middle of town?
