The Washington Center is the largest independent, nonprofit academic internship program in the country. It brings together exceptional and dedicated college students and civic, governmental and business leaders, hundreds of colleges and universities, scores of public and private host organizations (or internship sites), and more than 50,000 alumni. Tailored internships are secured with the more than 1,000 sites in governmental, international, business and nonprofit organizations. To document, analyze, and reflect on the experience, students complete an internship portfolio. In addition, students select one course from the 35 to 50 academic courses offered each semester. TWC’s Leadership forums offer remarkable programming. At their President’s Lecture Series, students hear from and question members of the cabinet, ambassadors, leading journalists, and CEOs. Their Public Policy Dialogues on Capitol Hill program enables students to meet in smaller groups with Members of Congress or their staffs. All students carry out a civic engagement project in an area of personal or professional concern. TWC’s housing is in shared apartments spread around the area in the District, in nearby Maryland, or Virginia. Full furnished and close to a Metro, each building features air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen, private bathroom, access to laundry facilities, Internet, local telephone, basic cable service, and secured building access with 24-hour front desk staff.
