The Summer Music Performance program is designed for Music majors or minors, or for students who have had significant previous music instruction. During the 5-week summer program, students enroll in a music history course that takes advantage of the rich cultural opportunities that Vienna and Austria offer – from touring composers’ homes, attending countless performances, visiting a workshop for historical instrument repair, to a weekend trip to Salzburg. Students also take a specially designed Beginning German language course for music majors, concentrating on diction and other music language proficiency requirements. In addition, students have the opportunity to take private music lessons from professional musicians (1 lesson per week, up to a limited stipend is included in the program fee), and to work together in small ensembles or as individuals to create a final performance open to the public. Live and study at the crossroads of European culture in the city that Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schiele, Kafka, and Freud once called home. Ride the tram along the Ringstraße and experience the extraordinary historic sights of the Innere Stadt, the first of Vienna’s 23 districts. Visit the Hofburg Imperial Palace and discover the historic Hapsburg Dynasty. Explore the vibrant Museumsquartier and shop at the famous outdoor Naschmarkt. Hike along one of the many trails through the green space that circles the city. Experience concerts, operas, and performances offered throughout the year. With quick and easy access to many of Europe’s major cities, Vienna is your doorway to Europe’s past and present. Vienna has always attracted artistic genius in music, art, architecture, literature, philosophy, and the sciences.
