Program Description

This program is designed for students who desire to be immersed in Ghanaian culture, language and history. For students looking to study abroad in Africa, or "off the beaten path", this program is also ideal. Study sociology, history, political science, economics and cultural studies in a highly interdisciplinary program. You will receive an incredible amount of support in this small program run by highly professional staff and faculty. The courses have been created to offer the students a multi-disciplinary approach to the history and culture of Ghana. Combined with the outstanding excursions, you will leave Ghana with a deep understanding, appreciation, and connection to the country and her people. For students interested in participating in a service-learning program, the Aya Centre arranges the related internship experience. Ghana is an ideal location for this model of academic training because of its immense socio-economic challenges in a variety of areas—including health, education, environment, gender, youth, and many others.

The Aya Centre is a single-purpose, multi-service organization designed to enhance the learning experience and cultural awareness of persons traveling to Ghana. The Centre is committed to contributing to the development of Ghana in particular and Africa in general. Towards this end, the Aya Centre provides groups with opportunities to engage in a variety of learning experiences during their stay in Ghana—including classroom instruction, site visits, field excursions, community service projects, and internship arrangements. The Aya Centre has two classrooms, a small seminar room, a reading room, and a computer room (with four computers with flat-screen monitors, all connected to the internet). Moreover, the entire Centre has wireless computer access. The Aya Centre is within walking distance from the University of Ghana, the premier university in Ghana. Students visit the campus often to attend conferences, use the library, and interact with both Ghanaian and international students who are enrolled at the University of Ghana.

Instructors are local Ghanaian professors. You will enroll in three courses in addition to supervised participation in a community service learning project/internship. You are enrolled in courses at the Aya Centre designed exclusively for students on the AHA Ghana Program.

ELIGIBILITY: minimum of 3.0 GPA
